Do Petra’s Al-Khubtha hike for views of the Treasury

Petra is rightly treasured as one of the New-Seven Wonders of the modern world. These are the legendary architectural treasures left behind by the Nabataeans amidst the spectacular landscape of Wadi Musa. But you simply wouldn’t be doing it justice without hiking one or more of Petra’s ancient hiking trails. Petra’s Al-Khubtha hike takes you high above the hill opposite the Theatre, eventually reaching a point opposite the Treasury. The distant views of the stunning landscape from the top remains one of the most endearing views of our Jordan trip.

Royal Tombs

The hike starts near the Palace tomb. As a result, you get the opportunity to visit the Siq, Treasury, Street of Facades, Theatre and Royal Tombs, in our case a second time. The second visit is no less awesome and an early start allows for a more tranquil experience.

Al-Khubtha trail

Take the sign-posted trail from beside the Palace Tomb. From here the steps lead behind the Royal tombs cutting into the rocks. Soon you will find yourself above the tombs with the Wadi Musa landscape stretching in front of you. The stepped access makes the hike relatively easy despite being labelled a ‘hard’ trek.

The first views of Petra from the top are of the Nymphaeum and the Colonnaded Street stretching to the Qasr al-Bint. In addition, from this vantage point the surrounding hills stretch dramatically for miles. Continue upwards and soon you reach a 2ndvantage point with the most awesome views of the Theatre.

From here the trail goes downhill on a less defined path. Nevertheless, the walk is not difficult. Eventually, it reaches a make-shift café. From here the Treasury can be seen in all its glory.

Return trail

It is possible to trek down towards the Treasury from this point but our guide advised against it as it was not an authorised trek and subject to flash floods. However, it was apparent that many did not heed the warnings.

Nangle angle

A worthy hike giving fabulous views of the key architectural treasures of Petra.
