Sensational Africa can be considered to be the least explored of the populated continents at least in terms of tourism. More than any other continent it bears testament to the ruthless exploitation of the last few centuries. Many of its cultures decimated and those that remain treated as curiosities. A land with untold mineral deposits below ground and a wildlife spectrum of large animals like no other continent, has only encouraged this exploitation.
Our African stories
But ethical tourism can change this. In the north-west in Morocco, the influence of desert caravanserais from Timbuctu has created the lively Marrakech souks. The cultural highlights continue in Egypt. Both countries have provided brilliant cycle touring. If world politics would allow, a visit to the continents largest country Algeria and Libya would be on the cards.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, the indigenous communities have boundless stories. Those of Masai, for example, are the protectors of the Serengeti. It is rare to see such courage, and respect for the animals they live amongst. This is a landscape of distant vistas, huge rivers, waterfalls, all protected by National Parks. These parks stretch across many countries. And, that is to protect the pride and joy of this continent, the large animal populations. From African elephants, lion, cheetah, leopard and wildebeest, to name just a few, a safari in Africa will never disappoint. Adventure seekers in South Africa in addition, have the abundant gigantic sealife to explore.
